Obituary

Wilma Gail Flanary, 81, Excelsior Springs, Missouri, formerly of Harrisonville, Missouri, died Friday August 1, 2014 at her home in Excelsior Springs. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 4, 2014 at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Harrisonville.

Wilma was born July 2, 1933 in Kansas City, Missouri, a daughter and youngest child of Finis Thomas and Carrie Cleo (Wolkey) Roberts. Wilma was a long time resident of Cass County, Missouri and was a 1951 graduate of Garden City, Missouri High School. She was united in marriage to Elmer Clark Flanary on July 28, 1951 at the Harrisonville First Baptist Church, the Rev. George C. Monroe officiating minister.

Wilma was baptized at age 9 at the Hollywood Presbyterian Church in Kansas City and was currently a member of Harrisonville First Baptist Church. She had lived in Kansas City, Missouri until moving to a farm northeast of Garden City in 1948. She enjoyed playing the piano and singing. Wilma was a licensed practical nurse at Harrisonville Memorial Hospital. In 1958 she started custom sewing and continued to sew until her death. In 1970 she was a real estate broker. She had been a school bus driver and enjoyed the young people, especially the band competitions. Wilma was best known as a farmer's wife and raising their four girls. She enjoyed having a house full of people to whom she could cater to and feed well. In 2004 she moved to Excelsior Springs and continued serving and cooking for her local church dinners.

Wilma was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Elmer, on December 14, 2013, her parents, a sister, Cleo Goodman, a brother, Finis Roberts Jr. and a grandson, Gabrielle Ketchum. She is survived by four daughters, Connie Ketchum, Freeman, Missouri, Cathy Jo Ginnings and husband, Dale, Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Carrie Wilson and Carli Flanary, both of Freeman, Missouri; a sister, Doris Smith, Bullard, Texas; an extended daughter, Susan Figg, Garden City, Missouri; 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
