William Dean "Mac" MacDonald, 90, Lees Summit, MO, died Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at Truman Medical Center, Lakewood in Kansas City, MO. Private family inurnment will be held at Orient Cemetery in Harrisonville, MO.
Mac was born April 23, 1921 in Kansas City, MO, the son of Walter and Gladys (Bussey) MacDonald. He was raised in Kansas City and was a 1938 graduate of East High School. He worked for almost two years operating steam tables at Myron Green Cafeteria in Kansas City. He then worked for Seidlitz Paint and Varnish Company, setting up a perpetual inventory system. Then he went to work at Benson Manufacturing Company for two years. Mac married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Mae Jones, on June 19, 1942. He joined the Navy in 1943 and served aboard a Destroyer Escort. His service included two crossings of the Atlantic Ocean, deep into the Mediterranean Sea, on escort duty; then through the Panama Canal and a long tour of duty in the South Pacific, which included two initial invasions on Luzon and three trips to Okinawa. He earned a 2nd Class Machinist rank, two Bronze Stars and later joined the Naval Reserves for a four year hitch.
After serving during WWII, Mac worked for the Vendo Company as a die setter in the press department for a couple of years; he then went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad as a telegrapher in Colorado for almost seven years. He then returned to Kansas City with his family, Evelyn and his daughter, Carol Ann. Mac obtained a real estate broker license and worked part time selling new homes. He worked for the Kansas City Terminal Railway Company as night chief telegraph and train order operator at the main relay office and as a towerman at the Rock Creek Junction interlocking plant. He retired after 27 years with the Terminal.
He then moved to Florida with Evelyn for 17 years before returning to Independence in 1999. Mac and Evelyn lived happily together for 68 years. He was a member of the Haxtun Colorado Masonic Lodge and a member of the Harry S. Truman American Legion Post #21 in Independence, MO.
Mac was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Evelyn on June 21, 2010. He is survived by one daughter, Carol Barrett and her husband, Jim, Lee's Summit, MO; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
