William D. (Bill) Sevy, Harrisonville, MO, died Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 18, 2012 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville with burial in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville. Friends may call from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, February 17 at the Atkinson Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to VFW Scholarship Fund or to Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
Bill was born to DK Sevy and Myrtle (Potras) Sevy on January 2, 1933 in Wayne, Nebraska. He was the youngest of six siblings, Derwood, Helen, Kenneth, Robert and Brenda, who passed in infancy. Bill grew up in Cass County and graduated from Harrisonville High School in 1952 and shared fond memories of classmates, playing football and participating in the first Mineral Water Bowl in Excelsior Springs.
Bill joined the Air Force in 1952 and was a Staff Sergeant in the 512th Fighter/ Interceptor Squadron which saw duty in England, Holland and Tripoli. He was very proud of his service, as well as the service of his older brothers, and was quick to relate stories of both when prodded. Bill was Honorably Discharged in 1956 and went to work for Massman Construction as a construction foreman, building high bridges in the northern part of the country. While building the Blatnik Bridge across the St. Louis River, from Duluth Minnesota to Superior Wisconsin, he met Arlene Reneé Belanger in Superior. The two soon became a family and were united in marriage in Pine City, Wisconsin with eight year old son, Mark Eisel.
This marriage of 52 years has produced four other children. In 1961, after the birth of William C. Sevy, the family returned to Missouri to make their home. While living in Harrisonville the family grew with Lane R. Sevy, Alison A. Sevy and Christopher D. Sevy. The majority of that time and the rest of his life was spent at his current home.
Bill held many positions, mostly in finance and the insurance industry and was an alderman for the City of Harrisonville, Mayor Pro Tem and was very active with Big Brothers/Big Sisters as a mentor and Cass County Committee Chair. He worked until the end of his life as an independent agent for several insurance companies. He had been a member of the VFW and Optimist Club.
Bill loved to fish and loved to share fishing with his family. He spent many hours with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren fishing and enjoying the outdoors.
Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, A. Reneé; sons, Mark D. Eisel (Kathy), William C. Sevy (Belinda), Lane R. Sevy (Dena); daughter, Alison A. Parker (Eric); 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and many nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher D. Sevy, his parents and siblings.
