Wayne E. Long, Sr., 93, of Pleasant Hill, Missouri died Thursday, October 20, 2016 at the Lee's Summit Medical Center in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Funeral Services 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri with visitation from 10:00-11:00. Burial in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Harrisonville.
Wayne was born January 7, 1923 in Daughtery, Missouri to Frank L. and Cora May (Evans) Long. He entered into US Army on January 12, 1943. He landed on Omaha Beach at Normandy on D-day and served through Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. During his tour of duty, he earned four bronze stars and the silver arrowhead.
On May 6, 1949 he married Alice Lea Johnston in Olathe, Kansas. He worked for Bendix Corp. in Kansas City 19 years, retiring in 1974. He loved fishing and farming, biscuits & gravy and his beloved dog, Pixie. He was a life-long resident of Cass County and a member of the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.
Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, in 1993, his parents, two brothers, Kenneth and Clifton, four sisters, Claire Jennings, Doris Garrett, Laura Wilt and Mary Jeane Nissen, one stepson, Jimmy Dell Barnes, and two grandsons, Jimmy Dell Barnes, II and Travis Ryan Long. He is survived by three sons, Wayne E. Long, Jr. of Blue Springs, Missouri, Dewayne E. Long of Raymore, Missouri, and Michael L. Long of Forrest City, Arkansas; one step-daughter, Bonnie Pluess of Ft. Worth, Texas; five grandchildren, Suzanne Wagener, Brandon Long, Shant'e Kilpatrick, Phillip Brown, and Timothy Flowers, and six great-grandchildren.
