Vernon S. Spradling, 99, formerly of Peculiar, Missouri, died Friday, October 9, 2015 at the Ozark Nursing and Care Center in Ozark, Missouri. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 16, 2015 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, Missouri with burial in Peculiar Cemetery, Peculiar, Missouri. Contributions may be made to the Raymore, Missouri Lions Club.
Vernon was born February 8, 1916 in Hill City, Kansas, the son of Emmet E. and Eva (Shackleford) Spradling. His family later resided on a farm outside of Peculiar and Vernon attended the Raymore, Missouri Schools, graduating with a senior class of 14. He subsequently moved to Kansas City and worked for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for 30 years, retiring as a foreman in 1979.
In 1989, Vernon returned to Peculiar where he was active in the Raymore Lions Club International, attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Harrisonville, Missouri for several years, and was a current member of the First Baptist Church in Peculiar.
In Vernon's 99 years, he was preceded in death by three wives, Helen, Faye, and most recently, Frances, his wife of 35 years, who died May 5, 2008. Vernon was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dale and Harold Spradling. Survivors include one nephew, Donald Spradling and wife, Esther, Topeka, Kansas; four nieces, Vera Jean Gorsky, Ft. Collins, Colorado; Mary Ann Malotte and husband, William, Surprise, Arizona, Doris Maloney and husband, Charles, Nixa, Missouri, and Carol Cornwell and husband, Lewis, Surprise, Arizona. Other survivors include several great nephews and nieces.
