Obituary

Velma Leona (Lynn) Helt-Diamond, 95, Peculiar, MO, died Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Village House Hospice in Lee's Summit, MO. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 11 with burial in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville. Visitation 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, November 10 at Atkinson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Higginsville Habilitation Parents Association.

Velma was born November 23, 1921 in Harrisonville, Missouri, the 10th of 12 children born to Samuel Vnoy and Tishey Tival (Coffey) Lynn. She attended Belle Plain #61 Rural School in Harrisonville from 1927-1935. She was a lifelong resident of Cass County, MO. On May 13, 1939 she was united in marriage to Ralph E. Helt. They were married for 58 years and the parents of three children, Barbara, Sam and Leroy. Ralph and Velma enjoyed the years they spent traveling, fishing, and the winters spent in Texas and Arizona before his death in 1997. During WWII, Velma worked at Pratt and Whitney and Lake City Ammunition Plant and later helped Ralph in their sod business.

In 2000, Velma reconnected with a childhood friend, Joe Diamond, and on October 14 of that year, they were married. In October they celebrated 17 years of marriage. They enjoyed the trips they were able to take together and playing cards with friends.

Velma was a Baptist and a longtime member of Peculiar Baptist Church. She had been a Pink Lady with Cass Medical Center and a member of the Higginsville Habilitation Parents Association. She was a gardener, seamstress, quilter, and loved to crochet. She was also a great cook!

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ralph on March 23, 1997, daughter, Barbara, son, Sam, 11 siblings, Myrle, Grace, Emily, Opal, Pearl, Verna, Ida, Ernest, Junior, Cecil, and an infant sister. She is survived by her husband, Joe, of the home; son, Leroy Helt and daughter-in-law, Sue Helt; grandchildren, Shawn Helt (Michelle) and Shanda Lawrence (Quentin); great-grandchildren, Kaila Leipard, Sutter and Slater Helt, Avery and Donovan Lawrence; Joe's sons, Bill Diamond (Sharla) and Leroy Diamond (Brenda); granddaughters, Angela Diamond and Anna Coble (Trey); grandson, Fred Seba; great-grandson, Braden Coble; great-granddaughter, Braeleigh McConnell;nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
