Tim was born on August 7, 1961, in Baltimore, Maryland, to James and Alice (Lowry) Crippen. He grew up in St. Louis and graduated from Parkway West High School in 1979. He attended the University of Missouri–Rolla, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Management in 1985. Tim spent his career working as an engineer, beginning at Nibco in Blytheville, Arkansas, and later at Artex in Kansas City, GNB, Continental Containers, and for more than a decade at Thermo Fisher Scientific.

He married Angela Lockard on June 12, 1988, and together they welcomed their son, Lee. After Angela's passing, Tim later married Tracy Wagner in 2004. He enjoyed mountaineering and climbed peaks in Colorado, Ecuador, and Mt. Rainier. He built and raced sports cars, collected minerals and gems and made jewelry, and even constructed his own telescope for stargazing. He was a member of the Astrological Society of Kansas City, the American Sailing Association, and the Sports Car Club of America, among many others. Faith was an important part of Tim's life. He was previously a member of the Methodist Church in Olathe and the Adrian Christian Church. In his later years, he joined the Catholic Church and became a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish.

Tim is preceded in death by his wives, Angela (Lockard) Crippen and Tracy (Wagner) Crippen; and his father, James Crippen.
