Thurman Fred Shipley, 91, Harrisonville, MO, died Thursday, December 7, 2006 at his home. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 9 at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville, officiated by Pastor Larry Hess, Everett Community Church, Archie, MO. Music by Nancy McDonnell. Casket bearers were Ed Robinson, Norvin Shipley, Jennifer Robinson, John Johnson, Lynn Crites and Matt Crites. Burial was in Freeman Cemetery, Freeman, MO. Military honors were under the auspices of the Harrisonville Honor Guard. Contributions may be made to St. Luke's Hospice, American Heart Association or to the Everett Community Church.
Thurman was born September 17, 1915 in Archie, MO, the 6th of 12 children born to Martin H. and Eliza (Brewer) Shipley. He lived in Cass County until the early 1920's when the family moved to Washington State and then to Idaho. They moved back to Cass County and Thurman graduated from Drexel High School. He joined the U.S. Army National Guard in 1941 for a one-year tour but Uncle Sam kept him for four years. After his military service, Thurman returned to the Bates County and Cass County, MO area and he married Ardis Fraizer. After her death, Thurman married Dorothy F. Adams on April 19, 1952. They lived in Archie until moving to Harrisonville in 1998.
Thurman was a farmer. Thurman was a member of the Everett Community Church and was a member of the ASC Board for 10-12 years. He was also a member of the Hickory Grove and Liberty Rural School Boards.
Thurman was preceded by his first wife, Ardis, his parents and 11 brothers and sisters, Luther, Burl, Chester, Clyde, Floyd, Clifford and Darrel Shipley, Gladys Phillips, Marie Shanks, Lola Mae Walter and an infant sister, Doris Shipley. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy, of the home; two sons, Ed Robinson and wife, Susan, Houston, TX and Norvin Shipley and wife, Sherri, Archie, MO; three daughters, Janice Robinson, Independence, MO, Rita Johnson and husband, John, Colorado Springs, CO and Connie Crites and husband, Lynn, Flower Mound, TX and nine grandchildren.
