Ruth Lorraine Mathis, 93, Mulvane, Kansas, died Saturday, May 7, 2016 at Maria Court in Mulvane. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at the Harrisonville United Methodist Church with visitation from 1:00-2:00. Burial will be in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville. Memorial contributions may be made to the church memorial fund.
Ruth was born May 19, 1922 in the Daugherty community, near Harrisonville, Missouri, the eldest daughter of Robert J. and Naomi (Noell) Powell. She was a 1939 graduate of Harrisonville High School. She attended Central Missouri State Teacher's College in Warrensburg, Missouri for two years and received her teaching certificate. She taught school at Hutchinson #62 Rural School in Harrisonville from 1941-1943.
Ruth was united in marriage to Larkin Coleman "L. C." (Jimmy) Mathis, of Mayfield, Kentucky, son of J. B. and Lena (Rhoades) Mathis, on August 29, 1947. They bought their first house in January, 1948. She was a member of the Daugherty United Methodist Church from 1933 until it closed in April, 1993. In October, 1993, she joined the Broadway United Methodist Church in Kansas City, and was a member of the Inquirer's Class. Ruth started working for Pratt Whitney in Kansas City, Missouri during the war, from May, 1943-August, 1945. Ruth worked for Pecks Department Store in Kansas City briefly before starting her career as an executive secretary for Farmers Insurance in Kansas City in January, 1946. She worked at Farmers for 38 years, until her retirement on May 24, 1984. She immediately began her second career working as a volunteer at Research Medical Center from 1984-2009.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Jimmy on December 27, 1978. She is survived by two sisters, Helen Smith, Mulvane, Kansas and Winona Powell, Tucson, Arizona; niece, Lynda L. Moravec (Rod), Mulvane, Kansas; nephew, Robert D. Smith (Leslie), Jupiter, Florida; 1 great-nephew, Bryan D. Smith (Dani); 3 great-nieces, Lisa Waller (Aaron), Jennifer Hopkins (Jade), Brittni Stallings (Chip); and 6 great-great-nephews.
