Ruby Edmona Young, age 99, Harrisonville, Missouri, went to be with her Lord on Friday morning, January 31, 2014 at Beautiful Savior Nursing Home in Belton, Missouri. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville with visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Orient Cemetery in Harrisonville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Faith Baptist Church, Salvation Army or Grace Hospice.

Ruby was born in Cimarron, Gray County, Kansas, on November 9, 1914, the only daughter of Roscoe C. and Vivian Edmona (Laughorn) Brown. She married Richard (Dick) Sanford Young on December 24, 1935 in Dighton, Kansas. Ruby graduated from high school in 1933 and studied at home for a County Teacher's Certificate. Her first school was the Eminence District in Finney County, Kansas. She taught there for two years until she married Dick. School teachers were usually single so she did not plan to teach after her marriage, but the Ravanna School needed a teacher and the Board asked her to take the school, where she taught for one year. Dust storms were prominent during her teaching years and she told many stories as to how they coped with them in the schools. She earned about $60 per month.

In 1945 the family moved to Missouri on a farm near Austin. Subsequently, they lived on farms near Archie, Garden City and Gunn City. In 1963 they left the farm and moved to Grandview where Dick and the two older boys ran a DX service Station. In 1964 they purchased Don's Truck Stop in Harrisonville. Ruby was the bookkeeper for the next 10 years. After retirement they traveled a lot, found good fishing spots, and enjoyed visiting with friends and relatives in various states.

Ruby was an active church member since age 14 and retired from teaching Sunday school classes at age 80, most of those years at First Baptist Church in Harrisonville. She was an avid Bible scholar, seamstress, and quilter. She was a meticulous record keeper and note taker. Her favorite Bible verse was Psalms 19:14 and she had great respect for the Rev. Billy Graham. She loved sports and attended every game she could that involved her children and grandchildren. She followed college and NBA basketball through television, radio and newspapers. She also enjoyed fishing wherever there was fish to be caught. She remained young at heart and never ceased to amaze people by telling her age.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Richard on August 18, 1984, a young daughter, Louise Ramona, an infant grandson, Douglas Edward Woodfin, and three brothers, Gleason, Leland and Forest. She was the proud mother of six living children, Linda (Richard) McNiel, Garden City, June (George) Johnson, Pleasant Hill, Wayne (Darlene) Young, Rogers, Arkansas, Phil (Donna) Young, Clinton, Alan (Suzie) Young, Harrisonville and Ron Young, Rogers, Arkansas. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Other survivors include her triplet brothers, Larry (Alma) Brown, Raymore, Lon (Cecelia) Brown, Belton and Gene (Nova Jean) Brown, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, as well as brother-in-law, LeRoy Young, Carthage, and two sisters-in-law, Margaret Foster and Marie Niblack, Lee's Summit, who shared many wonderful trips with her.
