Obituary

Robert Dale King, 83, East Lynne, MO, died Saturday, February 16, 2008 at Golden Years Care Center, Harrisonville, MO. Memorial services will be 2:00pm Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Harrisonville, MO. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:00pm Tuesday at the church. Bob was born March 28, 1924 in East Lynne, the son of Clyde Everett and Laura (Dale) King. He married Virginia Lee Brookhart East in 1957. Together they raised one daughter.

After graduating from high school in Garden City, MO, Bob enlisted in the service and was a tail gunner on a B-25. His plane went down twice: first in the Atlantic Ocean, then in Italy where he was picked up by German soldiers and held as a prisoner of war until the war ended. After the service, he spent four years in agricultural school at University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. Following graduation, he spent a short time in Arkansas grading cotton. He returned to East Lynne to work at Bendix. In 1962, while working at Bendix, he bought Bob's Country Store in East Lynne. He and Virginia operated the store for 22 years. After retirement, they traveled and worked on their roses.

Bob belonged to the United Methodist Church where he took an active part in the United Methodist Men's organization. He was also a Mason, a member of the VFW and the MU Alumni Association. He was active in the East Lynne community, serving on the East Lynne school board, Chamber of Commerce, fire department, Silver Manor, Fairground development and activities, and served as Mayor.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Clyde E. King. He is survived by his wife, Virginia, of the home; one daughter, Nancy Gregg and husband, Paul, Warrensburg, MO; two brothers, Richard King, East Lynne, and Sam King, Garden City, MO; one sister, Norma Cummins, Grandview, MO; two grandchildren, Erin Barrier and husband, Cody, Sedalia, MO, and Matthew Gregg and wife, Brenda, St. Joseph, MO; one great-grandson, Nathan Gregg; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice.
