Obituary

Richard "Dick" A. Getty, 82, Bolivar, MO, formerly of Harrisonville, MO, died Monday, May 9, 2022 Cox South Medical Center in Springfield, MO. A Celebration of Life  was held  Thursday, May 12, 2022 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO.

Richard and his twin sister, Roberta Prettyman, were born July 18, 1939 in Des Plaines, IL to Lawrence (Toad) and Bridget (Amraen) Getty.  He was a 1957 graduate of Freeman High School.  He served in the U. S. Army Reserves from March, 1958-January, 1965. After six months active duty, Richard was employed at Trans World Airlines as an IBM Operator for five years. He served on the Cleveland, MO Fire Department as a volunteer and also was a volunteer Deputy for the Cass County Sheriff's Office.

Richard was a devoted husband who found the love of his life when he met Marilyn A. (Butts) Speir. They were united in marriage on February 17, 1973, at the Freeman Baptist Church in Freeman, MO, by the Rev. Joe Brewster.

Richard retired in July 2001 from Clark Brothers in Kansas City, MO with 30 years of service in the trucking business as a driver and in management. He also opened two new truck lines in Kansas City, MO area. Upon retiring, Richard and Marilyn moved from Harrisonville, MO to their lake home on Pomme de Terre Lake, Hermitage, MO.

Richard, along with his wife, Marilyn, enjoyed traveling, camping, boating, and playing dominoes and cards with their friends at Pomme de Terre Lake. Dick also enjoyed helping the neighbors with repair projects. He was a good fix-it man.

Richard is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marilyn Getty, of the home; step-daughters: Gina Hastings and John of Murfreesboro, TN; Michelle Long and David, Las Vegas, NV; son, Shane Getty and Lisa, Las Vegas, NV; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; nieces, nephews, and many friends; and he loved his dog, Izzy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Bridget Getty; his twin sister, Roberta Prettyman; sisters: Evelyn Briggs, Marilyn Hanes, and Rita Wells; and two brothers: Larry and Robert Getty.
