Obituary

Reta Mae Huffman Pemberton, 80, Urich, MO, died Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 10, 2011 at the Atkinson Chapel in Adrian, MO with visitation at 10:00 a.m. at the chapel. Burial will be in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, Adrian, MO.

Reta was born December 7, 1930 near Winston, MO and grew up on a farm west of town. She graduated from Winston High School and moved to Kansas City, MO to attend secretarial school. Reta Huffman married Lester L. Leonard of Pattonsburg, MO in 1950. Reta and Lester had a son, Frank, in the summer of 1952 and a second son, David, in 1956. They moved from North Kansas City to South Kansas City in 1964 after having a new house built. Lester died in 1966.

Reta worked in the office at Danny Dare in the early 1950's. She worked in the office at Montgomery Ward in the mid-1960's. She worked at Crum & Forester Insurance in the early 1970's before joining the Postal Inspection Service in 1975. She transferred to the Saint Paul, Minnesota office as the service regionalized. In 1983, she had the opportunity to transfer back to the Kansas City area when the downtown offices reopened. After 20 years, Reta retired from the United States Postal Service, on October 3, 1991.

When Reta was refurbishing her home in Kansas City (with help from her nieces, Linda Roe and Teresa Pitts) she found and married Preston Pemberton in 1983. In 1984, Reta and Preston moved to their Independence, MO home. Through the years, they graciously shared their comfortable home with family. In 2004, they moved to rural Urich, MO to their farm with a new home to live in where they have enjoyed their cats and dogs and their renter's cows.

Reta is survived by her husband, Preston; two sons, David (and Lisa) Leonard and Rick (and Monica) Pemberton; grandson, Matthew (and Jennifer) Leonard; granddaughter, Amanda (and James) Hackett; three great-grandchildren, Braeden, Sonia and William; sister, Jessie Youtsey; brothers, Richard (and Joyce) Huffman and Larry Huffman; sister-in-law, Betty Huffman and numerous nieces and nephews.
