Obituary

Norman A. "Grumpy" Geyer, 77, Harrisonville, MO, died Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, MO. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville. Inurnment in the Missouri State Veteran Cemetery, Higginsville, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to Harrisonville Parks and Recreation Foundation.

Norm was born June 19, 1940 in Newton, MA, the son of Charlton and Margaret (Burns) Geyer.
He had lived in Newton, MA and joined the Air Force in 1957. He was stationed at a remote base in Alaska on the Distant Early Warning line during the Cuban missile crisis. He was transferred to Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base and moved to Harrisonville in 1966. He served a year in Vietnam before discharged in 1969. Norm married Gail C. Wells on September 24, 1961 in Seaford, New York. He received an associate's degree from Longview Community College.

Norm started the first taxi service in Harrisonville and then became a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Harrisonville for 27 years before retiring in 1992. Norm joined the Harrisonville Optimist Club in 1973, serving as president five times and District Lt. Governor twice. He was the District Oratorical Chairman of the annual Optimist Oratorical Contest and started the annual Harrisonville Optimist Easter egg hunt in the park, which he chaired for 23 years. Norm also started the annual pumpkin painting at North Park and coached little league football and soccer. Norm was a founding member of the Way Off Broadway Players and had roles in over 20 plays as well as directing four.

Norm was a member of the Harrisonville Park Board for 22 years, serving as chair in 2012-2013. While on the board, he helped with planning of the Aquatic Center, the Amphitheatre, the Community Center, and numerous shelter houses. In addition, he was a member of Harrisonville NETT, Cub Scout Pack 100, National Letter Carriers Union, Harrisonville Team 21, Cass County Historical Society, VFW Post 4409 and the Log Cabin committee. He volunteered with the Harrisonville Police Department, playing McGruff, the Crime Dog at the local schools. Norm was Harrisonville's official Santa Claus for 40 years and had portrayed Santa at the annual lighting of the Mayor's Christmas Tree and Breakfast with Santa at Applebee's. He enjoyed woodworking, collecting movie DVD's, improving the parks, going to Friday night high school football games, and participating in numerous school functions.

Norm was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters, Cliff, Chuck, Kay, Peggy, and Berneice. He is survived by his wife, Gail, of the home; four sons, Randy Geyer (Penny), Garden City, MO, Micheal Geyer (Shelly), Piper, MO, Walter Geyer (Janet), Walker, MO, and Doug Geyer (Nikki), Preston, MO; one daughter, Tina Taber (Ron), Rich Hill, MO; extended family, Fawna (Chris); Jamie (Brandie); brothers and sisters, Janet, Robert, Donald, Linda, Gwyn Wells, Vicky Reynolds and Jim Hart, Valarie and Kenny Fenton; grandchildren, Abby, Meaghan, Jerry, Briane, Jerymiah, Morgan, Mattie, Miles, Brayden, Katlinn, Abigail, Joey, Brandon, Jenna, Oden, Blake, Drake, Mason, Jazmine, Nicole, Dacota, Caeden, Maiya, and Dakota.
