Norma Lea Wernex, 90, Harrisonville, Missouri, died Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at St. Luke's East Hospital in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 5, 2015 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, with visitation from 10:00-11:00. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.
Norma was born January 9, 1925 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Covie Dow and Earnestine Gladys (Suchart) Gillis. She was a graduate of Grandview High School. She married Walter Russell "Russ" Wernex on March 7, 1945 in Olathe, Kansas. They moved to Harrisonville in 1953 to manage the Carnegie Farm.
Norma was a 50-year Red Cross volunteer and was a past president and member of the Harrisonville Lioness Club. She was a member of the Harrisonville United Methodist Church.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Fred and Jack Gillis, and her husband, Russ, on January 23, 2009. She is survived by two sons, William "Bill" Wernex (Marci Bauml), Harrisonville, Missouri and Jimmie B. Wernex (Ronda), Archie, Missouri; one daughter, Patsy L. Trent (Rob), Glendale, Arizona; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
