Obituary

Nora Isabelle Downey, 92, Adrian, MO, died Monday, March 17, 2008 at North Kansas City Hospital, North Kansas City, MO. Funeral services 2:00 PM Thursday, March 20, 2008 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, MO. Visitation 1:00-2:00 PM Thursday at the chapel. Burial in Lee's Summit Cemetery, Lee's Summit, MO. Contributions to Adrian Chrisitan Church, Adrian, MO.

Isabelle was born April 11, 1915 in Lee's Summit, MO, the daughter of Herman Ira and Erminia Agnes (Welch) Van Matre. She was the older of two girls, a younger sister, Alberta June Van Matre Robards. After pre-school years in Lee's Summit and Nevada, MO, Isabelle lived her entire adult life in Adrian, MO. She was married to Kenneth C. Downey on September 9, 1934. One son was born to this union, Larry Warren Downey. Besides her role as housewife, she taught Burdette, Red White and Blue, Crescent Hill, Buckhorn and McNeal country schools in Bates County in the late 1930's and 1940's. She also owned a dry goods store from 1959 to 1969, known as Isabelle's Fabric Shop in the old Haas building in Adrian.

Isabelle was baptized into the Christian Church in Harrisonville, transferred to the United Brethren Church in Adrian in 1929 and later transferred to the Adrian Christian Church in 1943 where she was an active member until her death. She held township offices for some ten years and was active in local lodges and clubs. Among several offices she held were president and vice president in the Past Noble Grands Club. She also served as president, vice president and secretary of the Adrian Extension Club. In later years, Isabelle was active in quilting and piecing quilts, making more than 30 quilts through the years. She also enjoyed corresponding with relatives all over the country, writing poetry and had done extensive research on the family tree.

Isabelle was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Alberta and her husband, Kenneth who died in 1996. She is survived and will be sadly missed by her son, Larry Downey and his wife, Nancy, Kansas City, Mo; three grandchildren, Beth Gagnon and her husband, Charlie, Phoenix, AZ, Matt Downey, Kansas City, MO and Drew Downey, Chicago, IL; two great-grandchildren, Perry and Leighton Gagnon, Phoenix, AZ; nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
