Melvin Douglas Taylor, 62, Harrisonville, Missouri, died Monday, November 18, 2013 at Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 22, 2013 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Melvin was born April 27, 1951 in Richmond, California to Ishamel and Ruth (Melton) Taylor. He was one of four children. He graduated from Wewoka High School, Wewoka, Oklahoma in 1969. Melvin married Vicki Kay Brewster on December 8, 1973 in Freeman, Missouri with Rev. Joe Brewster officiating. They are the parents of two sons and one daughter.
Melvin worked at Sears and Roebuck in his early years, House of Lloyd and most recently for Universal Forest Products for 11 years. He served his community by way of Harrisonville Emergency Management and the nation by way of FEMA. He was working with FEMA during Katrina.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law, Albert Lee Brewster, niece, Donna Hart and nephew, Landon Stafford, and Aunt Ruby Payne and her husband, Edward. He is survived by his wife, Vicki, of the home; two sons, Jamie Taylor and wife, Emily and Daniel Taylor and wife, Carrie, all of Harrisonville, Missouri; one daughter, Kristi Taylor of the home; two sisters, Joyce Askins, Independence, Missouri and Phyllis Smith, Hagerstown, Maryland; and his beloved grandchildren, Alexis, Kristopher, Hayden, Cole and Rowan; mother-in-law, Norma Brewster, Pleasant Hill, Missouri; brothers-in-law, Larry Brewster and wife, Rhonda, Bates City, Missouri; Garry Brewster and wife, Sherry, Urich, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Russ and husband, Ron, Canby, Oregon and Roberta Stafford, Harrisonville, Missouri; nephews, Robert Smith, Grant Russ, Tyler Russ and Jeremy Stafford and nieces, Karrie Grimes, Morgan Hill, Jill Russ, Sarah Eppert, Tami Bestafaka-Cruz.
Melvin was a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa, brother and uncle. To some, he was known as "Mel, "Doug" and "Papa". He touched many lives.
