Obituary

Melvin "Mel" Sehorn, 95, of Raymore, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at Foxwood Springs Senior Living in Raymore, MO. Funeral services were held on Friday, June 26, 2026, at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO.  Interment in Orient Cemetery in Harrisonville, MO.

Born December 15, 1930, in Oklahoma, he was the son of Sue and Roy Sehorn. Shortly afterward, his family moved to Arkansas, where he lived until moving to Kansas City, MO, as a teenager. He married the love of his life, Sandra Small, on April 24, 1953. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1961, then went on to spend his career as a lineman. He retired from Kansas City Power & Light after 33 years of service. Mel and Sandra built their first home near Harrisonville, MO. From there, the family moved to Peculiar, MO, and eventually to Raymore, MO, where Mel lived until his death.

Mel's favorite pastime was fishing, regardless of the weather. Family and friends enjoyed eating fish he caught, and many said he taught them the best ways to fish for Crappie. He loved to take Sandra and his children fishing, camping, skiing, and boating. His favorite lake was Stockton Lake in Missouri, where he owned property for many years. Also, he enjoyed woodcarving which was a hobby he taught himself after retirement.

Mel loved sports and faithfully followed his favorite teams, including Ray-Pec High School, KU basketball, and the Kansas City Royals. While living in assisted living, he watched every Royals game possible and often talked with staff and residents about the games. Mel and Sandra were longtime active members of First Baptist churches in Harrisonville, Peculiar, and Raymore, MO, where they developed many special friendships.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents Sue and Roy; his wife, Sandra; and his siblings: W.A. Sehorn, Lee Roy Sehorn, Lois Brigance, and Thelma Kehler. He is survived by his three children: Cindy (Glen) Bowman of Raymore, MO; David (Vaunda) Sehorn of Lawrence, Kansas; and Carol (Glen) Barnett of Dadeville, MO; grandsons: Mark (Kelly) Raby of Overland Park, KS; and Austin (Nikki) Sehorn of Seattle, Washington; great-grandchildren: Conner, Johnathon, and Payton; his sister, Jan Russell, of Harrisonville, MO; and many other family members and friends.
