Helen Maxine Morrison, 95, of Belton, MO, passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Beautiful Savior Nursing Home in Belton. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 8, 2023 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO. Interment in the Freeman Cemetery, Freeman, MO.
Maxine was born April 10, 1928 to Glen and Loretta (Walker) McBride in Amsterdam, MO, and she was the youngest of five. She graduated from Amsterdam High School with the Class of 1946, where she played softball and basketball all four years after learning from her brother, Glen. She also enjoyed playing piano, starting her lessons at the age of 7, and playing the piano for the Amsterdam Baptist Church until she was married at the age of 17. Maxine married the love of her life, Louis Garland Morrison, on December 31, 1945, while he was enlisted in the Army during WWII, eloping to Paola, KS. After his discharge, they lived on Garland's grandmother's farm between Drexel and Freeman, MO. After her passing, they moved to Kansas City. They were married for 65 years, until his passing in 2011 and they had one daughter, Cheryl Lynn.
Maxine began her career with AT&T as an operator, but eventually moved to an office clerk position in the engineering department, and on to a pricing and billing clerk within the accounting department. She was one of two who tested AT&T's first computers for billing while working in accounting. Eventually, she moved to an engineering assistant position where she remained until her retirement in 1985, after 36 years with AT&T, which helped her make many lifelong friends. In her free time, she enjoyed attending VFW meetings, bowled on a team, and participated in baseball and basketball.
After retirement, she moved back to the Drexel/Freeman area. She liked to read, travel, garden, and freeze produce. Garland and her traveled to California to see her sister, Margaret, to Branson several times, Oklahoma for the Azalea festival, Pella, IA and the Amana colonies for the tulip festival, and many other places. She was a member of the Lisle Homemakers Club and lifetime member of the AT&T Pioneers. She was also a member of the Gregory Blvd Church of Christ in Raytown, MO, and believed in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.
Maxine is preceded in death by her husband, Garland Morrison; her parents; her brother, Glen McBride, Jr.; and her sisters: Mary Louise McBride, Margaret Sims, and Ruby Turpen. She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Jack) Dyer of Raytown, MO; nephews; cousins; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
