Obituary

Max B. Herrick, Jr., 73, of Peculiar, Missouri, lost his life on Saturday, May 2, 2020 as a result of an accident on I-49 north of Harrisonville, MO.  A private family funeral service, with military honors, was held on Monday, May 11, 2020 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville. Burial followed in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, MO.

Max was born August 13, 1946 in East Lynne, Missouri, a son of Max B.  and Mary E. (Loehr) Herrick.  He was raised by his aunt and uncle, David and Peggy Loehr, who treated him as a son.  He grew up in the Kansas City, MO area and was a 1964 graduate of Northeast High School in Kansas City.

Max was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, serving 1968 through 1970.  After his discharge from the Army, he was united in marriage to Terry A. Collins on April 18, 1970 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Kansas City.  They moved to Peculiar in 1976.

Max worked as a machinist for Twin City Tool in Olathe, KS, and later worked as a custodian for the Raymore-Peculiar School District for 20 years before his retirement.  He was a member of the Peculiar, MO Lions Club, VFW Post 4409 in Harrisonville, and the Rock Brook Church in Belton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Harry Carpenter; his uncle, David Loehr; grandson, Adam Herrick; brothers: Bernard Herrick, Mickey Herrick, Doug Loehr and Kevin Loehr; and three sisters: Mary Louise Herrick, Shari Lovette and Nancy Smith.

Max is survived by his wife, Terry Herrick of Peculiar; two sons: Robert (Debra) Herrick, Harrisonville, MO, and Dennis (Andrea) Herrick, Peculiar; one  daughter, Robbin (Mike) Abbott, Kingsville, MO; his aunt, Peggy Loehr, Hermitage, MO; his brothers: James Tavis, Edwardsville, KS and Rick (Linda) Loehr, Liberty, MO; three sisters: Barbara (Bill) Strickland, Oklahoma City, OK; Linda Bates, Battle Creek, MI; and Diane (Bill) Hoover, Cedar Springs, MI; five grandchildren: Lori Lenhart-Abbott, Cody Lenhart-Abbott, Clint Herrick, Emma Herrick, and Chloe Herrick;  one-great-grandson, Benjamin Abbott; his dog best friend, Millie; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins that he loved.
