Obituary

Mary Therese Mulligan, 78, Garden City, Missouri, died Friday, September 12, 2014 at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 17 2014 at Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church in Harrisonville, MO. Burial in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville. A rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday with visitation to follow from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville. Memorial contributions may be made to Smile Train (smiletrain.org) or to charity of choice.

Mary Therese was born September 18, 1935 in Sigourney, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Marguerite (Ollinger) Smith. She grew up in Sigourney and was a graduate of Sigourney High School. She earned her Bachelor's degree from Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa and a Master's degree in Science Education from Syracuse University in New York and taught in public and parochial schools throughout her life.

Mary Therese married James R. Mulligan on May 10, 1969 at Redemptorist Catholic Church in Kansas City, Missouri. They lived in Raymore, Missouri before moving to Garden City in 1972. She was a long-time active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Harrisonville, Missouri.

Mary Therese was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Al Smith, Don Smith, Gene Smith, and John Smith. Survivors include her husband, James Mulligan of the home and her four children, Peggy (Stephen) Mouse of Urich, MO, Michael (Tracy) Mulligan of Columbia, MO, Amy (Shawn) Kennedy of Prairie Village, KS and Chris (Natalie) Mulligan of Alexandria, VA; one sister, Clara Herman of Salon, IA; one brother, Terry Smith (Marilyn) of Cedar Rapids, IA; two sisters-in-law, Francine Smith of Oskaloosa, IA and Sally Smith of Omaha, NE; eight grandchildren, Jimmy, Katy, Anna and Evan Mouse, Harry and Marguerite Kennedy and Caroline and George Mulligan and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mary Therese was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be deeply missed.
