Marvin Lee Mickelson, 101, Freeman, MO, died Sunday, October 7, 2007 at the Pleasant Hill Health & Rehabilitation Center in Pleasant Hill, MO. Funeral services 1:00 P.M. Friday, October 12 at the Freeman Presbyterian Church, Freeman, MO. Burial in Freeman Cemetery. Visitation 6:30-8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville, MO. Contributions may be made to the church memorial fund.
Marvin was born September 7, 1906 in Gunn City, MO, the second oldest child of Frank C. and Elizabeth Lovell (Crowl) Mickelson. Marvin married Nellie Gwendolyn Bogar on September 25, 1925. Their only son, Marvin Lee, Jr., died in 2002.
Marvin was a highly respected businessman and community leader. He had lived in Freeman for 90 years. He and his brother-in-law, Giles Bogar, opened Bogar and Mickelson Grocery in 1927. It remained in business for over 50 years. Marvin was a life-long member of the Freeman Presbyterian Church where he attended for many years without missing a Sunday. He was a member and served as the first president of the Freeman Lion's Club. Recently Marvin was honored as "Grand Marshall" of the Freeman Homecoming.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Marvin Lee, Jr., three brothers, Walter Mickelson, Frank L. Mickelson, Jesse Harold Mickelson and two sisters, 2-year-old, Grace Marie Mickelson and Merle Bogar. Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Mickelson, Grand Junction, CO; a daughter-in-law, Merrilee Mickelson, Freeman, MO; one sister, Ruth Levitsky, Canada; two grandchildren, Kent Mickelson and his wife, Cherry, Freeman, MO and Kathleen South and her husband, Ralph, Drexel, MO; five great-grandchildren, Cory, Melissa, Jerod, Merrilynn and Chaz and one great-great-grandson, Jacob.
Marvin had so many friends in his life and he would have wanted to say thanks to some very special people who truly became family to him. Thank you, Joe and Dorothy Rodier, Norvell and Nina Kemper, Hazel Thomas, Darrell Williamson and Elton Adams. He will be greatly missed.
