Marvin "Lyle" Baker, 80, Archie, Missouri, died Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at the First Baptist Church in Archie with burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery in Adrian, Missouri. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at the church. Contributions may be made to the church memorial fund.
Lyle was born August 19, 1933 in Teresita, Missouri, the son of Omer Carl and Edith Irene (Winn) Baker. He was a 1951 graduate of Birch Tree Missouri High School. After high school, he moved to Kansas City, Missouri and worked at the General Motors Fairfax Plant before being drafted into the U. S. Army. He then attended Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, Missouri for 1 ½ years. He attended Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri where he received a Bachelors and Masters degree in Education. Lyle married LaVerna Irene Smotherman on January 18, 1958 at the Mountain View Baptist Church in Mountain View, Missouri. A long-time Christian, Lyle was baptized at the Calvary Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Archie.
Lyle moved to Archie in 1960 and taught high school English, Literature and Journalism for 37 years at Archie High School, retiring in 1997. He also served as City Clerk of Archie from 1963-2008 before retiring there as well.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, two brothers, Marion Merle and Wilbur Vern Baker. He is survived by his wife, LaVerna, of the home; two sons, Kevin Lane Baker, Cedar City, Utah and Jay Scott Baker, Chicago, Illinois; one daughter, Laurie Beth Lynn, Overland Park, Kansas; three sisters, Vearl Ferdon, Tucson, Arizona, Norma Gene Wade, Independence, Missouri and Hazel M. Reynolds, Kingman, Arizona and 8 grandchildren.
