Martha Jane Cook, 94, Adrian, Missouri, died Friday, March 1, 2013 at Adrian Manor in Adrian. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 5 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian. Cremation with inurnment at Clearfork Cemetery in Garden City, Missouri.
Martha Jane was born October 19, 1918, the daughter of James Monroe and Jessie Edna (Gordon) Aldridge in Fairmount, Missouri. Martha, one of six girls, grew up in Fairmount and attended Jane Hayes Gates Elementary School. She attended Fairmount Christian Church, where she and all her sisters were members. Martha married William Lloyd Cook in October of 1936 and to this union, 5 children were born, James Monroe, William Lloyd (Billy) Jr, Joyce Ann, Lois Jane and Laura Mae.
Early in the 1940's, Martha and Lloyd moved from Missouri to Norwalk, California where they owned and operated a filling station for many years. Martha worked side by side with her husband, pumping gas and washing windshields for their customers. After retirement, Martha and her husband moved to Perris, California where they spent many happy years with friends and also traveled back "home" to Missouri for visits quite often in summer months. After Lloyds' death, Martha moved to the Adrian Manor Nursing home in Adrian, in 2008, to be closer to her sisters and nieces.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, children, James Cook, Billy Cook, Joyce Gibson, Lois Renn and Laura Morgan, sisters, Natalie Beard, Lillian Ryan, Edna Faulkner, Maudine Somers, grandson, Nick Gibson and her parents, Jessie and Jim Aldridge. She is survived by one sister, Nadine Harnish of Raytown, Missouri; nieces, Sue Carver, Linda Stephens, Judy Wilson, Sharon Moores, Betty Vento, Pam Yarnell, Glennie Carmichael, Patty Ring and Daisy Duncan.
