Marie was born September 1, 1921 to Walter and Chloe (Smith) Berkebile. She lived her younger years in the Ballard, Spruce and Adrian community. She married Clarence William Scott on October 20, 1946. During their marriage, they traveled around the country while her husband was enlisted in the Army. Although she experienced and saw many different places, she always spoke highly of Germany and the friends she made during her time there. Throughout their travels, she made some great memories and experienced some extraordinary places and had the opportunity to meet some great people.
On May 23, 1958, Marie and Clarence welcomed their only daughter, Marcia Kay (Scott) Smith in Waynesville, Missouri. In 1962 Marie and Marcia moved to Adrian, Missouri and then in 1964 Clarence joined them after his retirement from the service. Marie started working in the Adrian school cafeteria in 1966 until her retirement in 1991. She was more than just a school cafeteria worker; while being a very dedicated employee, she also watched over all the children she saw in her many years at the school and they all held a special place in her heart.
Marie and Clarence were a part of many bowling leagues, as well as traveling the state to support her husband and be his own personal score keeper for his love of pitching horseshoes. After the tournaments were over, no matter what, she was always ready on Saturday nights to go to a stock car race. In 1992 Marie became a "nanny" when she welcomed her only grandchild, Jessica Marie Smith, born to Danny and Marcia. After Clarence's passing in 1995, Marie started going to the Boats to play the slot machines, which ended up being a hobby that she enjoyed greatly for many years. She also enjoyed going on tour bus trips with friends that traveled all over to see many new places, as well as travel all over to go to the casinos and play her favorite slot machines. You could always count on her being at bingo on Monday nights in Adrian. She would always start up a card game, and if you took your chances at playing against her, you could bet she was always ready to beat you.
Throughout her lifetime she quilted many beautiful quilts along with many crocheted afghans that she had displayed throughout her home. Marie took great pride in her home and always kept it spotless, inside and out. A majority of people will remember Marie as the lady on the corner of 3rd street, mowing her yard on her old Swisher mower with her fanny pack on and her floppy hat on (which she wore until she ran over it with the mower last year). Up until just a few years ago, she was washing her windows, cleaning out her gutters, and shoveling snow off her driveway until one of her neighbors, Marcia, or Danny would catch her, and then she would be in trouble, but that never stopped her. When it was time to rake leaves you could bet on her being out there raking them to the ditch, ready to burn them when Marcia or Danny got to the house, although sometimes she wouldn't wait. She took pride in her yard, as well as her home, and one of her passions that everyone will remember her for is her love for yard work.
In 2013 Marie also become nanny to a great-grandson, Abel, born to Jessica. Marie took great pride in getting to be nanny to Abel Landon Michael. She would spend their time together playing with her cat, eating snacks (which she loved snacks), playing outside, watching him ride the lawnmower with his grandpa, Danny, watching Wheel of Fortune, and loving on him.
Marie was an inspiration to many, a devoted wife to Clarence, a loving mother to Marcia, and Nanny to Jessica and Abel. She loved her family and spent every day of her life making sure they knew that.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clarence, and two brothers, Ralph and Roy Berkebile. She is survived by her daughter, Marcia Smith (Danny); one granddaughter, Jessica Marie Smith, and one great-grandson, Abel Landon Michael, all of Butler, Missouri.
