Lula was born January 19, 1917 in Pondfork, MO, Ozark County, the daughter of James Henry and Rose Belle (Guthery) Bradley. She lived in Pondfork during her early childhood and later moved to Thornfield, MO. She married Delmas Howerton on July 10, 1936. They owned a store in Thornfield and also in Telodo, MO. They lived in Washington state and then moved to Kansas City, MO where she resided until moving to Harrisonville in 2006.
Lula retired from Dupont at Lake City Ammunitions Plant in Independence, MO as a plant foreman, in February, 1982. She was a member of the Thornfield Baptist Church and had attended Blue Ridge Baptist Church in Kansas City for many years. It was years of Bible study that gave wear to the edges of Lula's lifetime Bible. She loved bluegrass music, flowers, especially pink roses and collected beautiful rocks from Arkansas that she used to line her flower garden.
Growing up in the southern, Missouri hills in times of depression, left an imprint on her of the importance of hard work and responsibility. As children, Lula and her sisters used to wrap a large rock in a blanket, draw a face on it and that was their play doll. When growing up, family life consisted of hard work to maintain their farm, house, own food, milk and a smoke house. It was a combination of times like those that truly molded character into her life. Lula Mae was a realist and very straight lined in her life.
Lula was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George on August 17, 1988 and five brothers. She is survived by two sisters.
As in Matthew, the passage reads "straight is the gate and narrow is the way". Rest in peace and with God, go home.
