Lorenzo "Mac" Dow McCoy, 88, Harrisonville, MO died Monday, January 28, 2019 at St Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, MO. A memorial service was held Monday, February 4, 2019 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville.
Mac was born June 26, 1930 in Humansville, MO, a son of Joe and Ola Nancy (Simmons) McCoy. He grew up in Nelson, MO and joined the Army in 1947. He served over twenty years and had served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired from the army in 1969 as a Master Sergeant E-8. Mac married Velma Louise Fishback on June 14, 1958 at Velma's parents' home in Fristoe, MO. They have lived in Harrisonville since 1971. They owned and ran the Wagon Wheel Restaurant for eight years and the Halfway Truck Stop for two years. Mac worked for the Trans Alaska Pipeline as camp and food manager for one year and as cafeteria manager at Western Electric for seven years. He also drove the OATS bus for 14 years.
Mac was a member of the First Baptist Church in Harrisonville and the Wednesday morning Coffee Club at church. He was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed farming, meeting his coffee buddies, western movies, and spending time with his family. Mac was a wonderful "Papaw" to his grandchildren and loved them all dearly. He loved spending time with them and especially taking them all fishing.
Mac was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother, Joseph Paul. He is survived by his wife, Velma, of the home; three daughters, Sonya Wendler (Mark), Ava, MO, Shelley Ederer (Steve), Pleasant Hill, MO and Dowlene Wise (Mark), Cleveland, MO; two brothers, Roy McCoy (Kay), Silver Springs, MD and Sidney McCoy (Sandra), Kansas City, MO; 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
