Ken was born on October 13, 1938, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Chris and Myrtle (Meyer) Thomsen. He graduated from East High School in Kansas City, MO, continuing his education by obtaining his Associate's degree. Ken served in the US Army from 1961-1963, as a Flying Crew Chief. After his enlistment, he met the love of his life, Joyce McDowell, and they were married on August 20, 1966 in Kansas City, MO. He spent his career working as a Tool & Die maker, although he was also a KC Star junior salesman while working as a paper boy in his younger days. During high school, he played football at Don Bosco Community Center and was a member of the Boy Scouts, enjoying his time spent at Camp Nash. He was a member of the YMCA Indian Princess with his two daughters. Later in life, he was a member of the Scottish Rites, the Ararat Shrine, and the Temple Gate Masonic Lodge #299 AF & AM, serving as Worshipful Master in 1988.
Ken was a very loving husband and father. His family was the most important part of his life, priding himself in always taking care of his family and leaving a legacy of being an honest and hardworking man. Ken was the type of guy who was always available for a helping hand if needed, which led to him having a large group of friends. He was an avid KC Chiefs fan and never missed a game. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting, but his favorite pastime was spending time with his children and grandchildren, and even affectionately nicknamed his daughters, calling Millicent "Bones" and daughter, Robin, "Little Bit". Ken was also an artist, enjoying painting and carving. He currently has a painting hanging in the Kansas City YMCA Building and during high school, a statue he carved of a mythological creature won nationwide recognition, traveling across the US and all around the world. He will be missed by all who knew him. His smile and laughter will always be remembered.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kris Thomsen; grandson, Matthew Gilmore; sisters: Shirley Hodge and Pat Keithley; and brother, Don Thomsen. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Thomsen; daughters: Robin Essex and Millicent Anderson; grandchildren: Chrisann Latham, Kenneth Thomsen, Anthony Vasquez, Britni Lear, Matt Gillmore, Christina Lear, Jessie Lear; 7 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters; and many extended family and friends.
