Kenneth Doyle McDonald, 91, of Bellflower, California passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at his home with his wife by his side. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2020 at 2:00 pm at his home in Bellflower. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at New Church Cemetery in Edge, Texas followed by a Celebration of Life BBQ at the Edge Community Center.
Ken was born on August 29 ,1928 in Edge, Texas, the son of Ruben and Ollie (Corgey) McDonald. Kenny graduated from Normangee High School in 1947, then attended Sam Houston State Teacher's College to play basketball for a year. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, not only serving overseas as part of the police force, but he played basketball when stateside in Oklahoma. He met the love of his life, Patricia Ann (Wallace) Kasmarsik and they united in marriage on March 3, 1975, where he became a step-father to three girls and one boy: Vicki, Cheri, Toni, and Kevin. They lived a short time in Texas, moving to their home in Bellflower in 1983.
Kenny may have been known to people as "Red", "Lil' Red" (his older brother was "Big Red"), or even "Mac", depending when in his life you met him. He opened and sold 6 different shops from 1955 to 1990, where his children still tell fond stories of working at the diner, so even his grandchildren feel as though they knew some of the regulars from the stories over the years. It could easily be argued that he made the best doughnut around.
He took up golf later in life as a pastime and although he didn't claim he was that good, he was known to get the occasional hole in one or even rank pretty high in tournaments. After his stroke, they thought he wouldn't golf again; however, he was not okay with that prognosis, so he did the therapy to get back out on the green and continued to golf well into his 80's. His health began to decline more in late 2017, when he started having heart issues and he eventually had to put the clubs up, due to lack of strength and endurance.
The things people maybe didn't know about Kenny include his pastime playing the harmonica and how he loved watching western variety shows. He also played a mean game of cards and enjoyed a worthy opponent whether gin or euchre was the game. He was always good for a story, ranging from Elvis concerts and honky tonks to deep sea fishing to politics and of course, golf. He had an unwavering work ethic and a love for his family that could not be paralleled. One thing that still kept him going was his love for his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as the highlights to his days became the visits from them all, no matter how long they stayed. The legacy he leaves behind is that of strength, endurance, and that family is everything, including being loved by all children and pets.
Kenny was preceded in death by his parents; his step-daughter, Vicki Vasquez; his son-in-law, Dan Braafladt; and all eight of his siblings: Norman, Grace, Ruth, Faye, Harry, Mabel, Foy, and Golda. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Patricia McDonald of the home; his step-daughters: Toni Braafladt of Carson City, NV; and Cheri Beall of Lee's Summit, MO; his step-son, Kevin (Sandi) Kasmarsik of Huntington Beach, CA; 6 grandchildren: Tiffany Heredia, Ronald Kasmarsik, Kristi (Gareth) Addis, Lacy (Art) Mulcahy, Melissa (Joshua, Sr.) Ruth, and Katin Kasmarsik; 6 great-grandchildren: Sophia and Michael Heredia; Emmett and Reta Mulcahy; and Joshua, Jr and Talis Ruth; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
