Obituary

Kenneth Ray Johnson, 73, Harrisonville, Missouri, died Saturday, August 2, 2014 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 8, 2014 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville with burial in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF), 383 Main Avenue, 5th Floor, Norwalk, CT 06851, or www.themmrf.org.

Kenneth was born June 20, 1941 near Dustin, Oklahoma, the son of Walter Everett and Minnie Beatrice (Branum) Johnson. He married Maggie Basquez on October 1, 1958 in Wetumka, Oklahoma. They moved from Oklahoma to Harrisonville in 1962 where he operated several successful businesses, most notably the K and J Furniture Store which he owned for 29 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran where he served two tours aboard ship to the Western Pacific over a period of four years.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Clifford Johnson and Afton Johnson and one sister, Joyce Triece, all of Holdenville, Oklahoma. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Maggie, of the home; one son, Kenneth Randall Johnson, Kansas City, Kansas; one daughter, Renea McCann, Belton, Missouri; three brothers, J. D. Johnson, Harrisonville, Missouri, Lester Johnson, Kimberling City, Missouri and Ronnie Johnson, Holdenville, Oklahoma; 5 grandchildren, Sheena Marie Gordon, Kenneth Richard Johnson, Kody Randall Johnson, Travis Joseph McCann and Heather Christine Johnson; and 3 great-grandchildren, Jackson Pierce, Lilianna Johnson and Greenley Gordon.

Those who were fortunate enough to be the family and friends of Kenneth Johnson will carry the lessons he taught for all of our lives. The family sincerely thanks all in the community and the Kansas City Hospice organization for your support during this difficult time. We ask that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Kansas City Hospice so that others may be comforted as we have been.
