Obituary

Kenneth B. Gleason, 96 of Lee's Summit, MO, died Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at Village Care Center in Lee's Summit. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2010 at the Atkinson Chapel in Harrisonville, MO with visitation from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. Burial will be in Freeman Cemetery, Freeman, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Kansas City Metro Office, 6700 Antioch Road, Suite 100, Merriam, KS 66204 or to John Knox Hospice, 1001 NW Chipman Road, Lee's Summit, MO 64081.

Kenneth was born October 5, 1913 in Bloomfield Township, Walworth County in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin on the family farm, the son of Harley Edward and Frances Geneva (Delaney) Gleason. At age 17, Kenneth went into the Civilian Conservation Corp in Three Lakes, WI. In 1933 he went to Daytona Beach, FL, where he worked on a dairy farm. He also met his future wife, Winifred Louise Reid while in Daytona Beach and on May 29, 1936 they were married. While living in Daytona Beach, Kenneth would drive winter residents from New York and Washington, D.C. to their homes and they would pay his fare back to Daytona.

After he married, he and Winifred moved to Detroit, MI. He later moved his family back to Daytona Beach where he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served during WWII. In 1943 he went to the South Pacific as a member of the 102nd SeaBee Battalion and returned home in 1945. In 1947 he moved to Peculiar, MO and got a job in the sheet metal trade. He retired in 1979.

He and Winifred had a small farm and spent their leisure hours doing needlepoint, quilting and making afghans. Kenneth moved to John Knox in October, 1996 and lived there until his death. While at John Knox, he joined the quilters circle, played cribbage and danced! He was a member of the Presentation Catholic Church in Lee's Summit, MO. He was a 60-year member of Local #2 Sheet Metal Workers; he was past master (1959) and member of the Cleveland Masonic Lodge #651 and later a member of the Grand River #276 Masonic Lodge in Freeman, MO.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred on May 13, 1996, his parents, three brothers, Arthur Gleason, Walter Gleason and Earl "Bumpy" Gleason and three sisters, Carol Smith, Helen Gleason and Ethel Weinholt. He is survived by one son, James Gleason and his wife, Carol of Peculiar, MO; two sisters, Lorraine Henry and Dena Hansen, both of Lake Geneva, WI; four grandchildren, Judy Crawford, Jeff Gleason, Jill Gleason and Jon Gleason; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
