Jon "Jack" William Streit, 78, Harrisonville, Missouri, died Friday, May 9, 2014 in Kansas City, Missouri. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at the Harrisonville United Methodist Church with visitation from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
Jack was born April 4, 1936 in Manly, Iowa, the son of Burrell and Marie (Meyer) Streit. He was a 1954 graduate of Elkador Iowa High School, where he played football and basketball. He married Vonna McCormack on March 24, 1961 at the United Methodist Church in Warrensburg, Missouri.
He went to linotype school before becoming a print press operator for several newspapers, including the Warrensburg Herald, Drexel Star and the Cass County Democrat. He retired after 24 years as a press operator for Spangler Printing. Jack had lived in Warrensburg before moving to Harrisonville in 1962. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Harrisonville. He was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader and was an honorary member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. More than anything, Jack loved spending time with his family.
Jack loved to camp and fish. He was an avid fisherman and participated in many fishing tournaments. After retirement, Jack and Vonna became snow birds, spending their winters in Texas, playing cards, going to concerts, singing in the church choir and enjoying the warm weather with friends.
Jack is survived by his wife of 53 years, Vonna, of the home; his five children and their spouses, Kenneth and Virginia Douglas of McKinney, Texas, Michelle and Randy Otterbein of Sumner, Iowa, Steven and Michelle Streit of Harrisonville, Missouri, Larry and Brenda Streit of Overland Park, Kansas and Melissa Streit of Lawrence, Kansas; 12 grandchildren, Josh, Jennifferr, Stephanie, Branden, Amy, Ryan, Dustin, Garrett, Aaron, Nicole, Deanna and Baylee; 2 great-grandchildren, Reagan and Easton; one sister, Kay Bauer of Knoxville, Iowa, as well as many nieces and nephews.
