John H. Wood, 82, Peculiar, MO, passed away Monday, July 13, 2020 at his home. Memorial services were held Friday, July 17, 2020 at the First Church of Peculiar in Peculiar, MO. Contributions may be made to: C.A.N. Children and Nutrition, c/o Atkinson Funeral Home.
John was born March 22, 1938 in Shelby County, MO, a son of Herndon and Dolores (Maupin) Wood. When he was eight years old, his mother remarried, Bernie M. Banowich, and they moved to Connecticut where he was raised with his sisters, Bonnie and Joyce. John thought the world of his dad, Bernie. After graduation in 1958 from Wethersfield High School and a year at UConn, John joined the U. S. Air Force. He was in the first computer class to graduate from Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi. From Keesler, John was sent to a radar sight outside Kirksville, MO, which put him very close to his grandparents, aunts and cousins, who were in Clarence, MO, where he was born. He met Linda Mooneyham and they married June 25, 1960. Their infant daughter, Kimberly Marie, was born and died in 1961. John was then stationed in Germany for three years where their daughter, Kelly and son, Michael were born. Their son, Patrick was born after they arrived back in the states. After a long tour back at Keesler AFB, John was stationed in Korat, Thailand. Upon return, he was then stationed at Richards Gebaur AFB in Belton, MO, where he retired after 20 years in the service as a senior master sergeant.
Upon retirement, John and a friend owned and operated a meat processing plant in Peculiar, MO. Later John and his son, Pat, owned and operated a computer sales and repair business. After retiring, John could devote himself to hunting and fishing, snow skiing, flying his airplane, and for several years, teaching students to fly. John was a member of the First Church of Peculiar in Peculiar, MO. He was a 50-year member of the Cass Masonic Lodge #147 AF&AM, Harrisonville. He had lived in Peculiar since 1972.
John was preceded in death by his father, Herndon Wood, infant daughter, Kimberly Marie, his parents, Dolores and Bernie Banowich, and one sister, Bonnie Celtsuda. He is survived by his wife, Linda Wood, of the home; two sons, Michael Wood (Dara), Kansas City, MO and Patrick Wood (Shellie), Warsaw, MO; one daughter, Kelly Anderson (Bill), Peculiar, MO; one sister, Joyce Anagnos, Naples, FL; 8 grandchildren, Ashley Lyon (Mitch), Shane Anderson (Kacie), Bryan Wood, Megan Guillen (Aaron), Aubrey J. Wood, Lauren M. Wood, Mindy Johnson (Kody), and Mike Sanders (Rikki); 9 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
