John Joseph Dyck, 64, Harrisonville, Missouri, formerly of Independence, Missouri, died Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at St. Luke's East Hospital in Lee's Summit, Missouri, after a short battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 28, 2016 at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Independence, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church.
John was born February 6, 1952 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the son of Joseph and Gladys (Grunberg) Dyck. He grew up and attended school in Vancouver. He received a Diploma of Technology (BioScience/Food Processing) from British Columbia Institute of Technology in 1973 and a Bachelor's of Science (Biological Sciences) from Simon Fraser University, British Columbia in 1977. He went on to receive a Master's Degree in GeoSciences from Mississippi State University.
He worked for the Canadian Fishing Company, based in Vancouver and TeroChem Ltd/BDH Chemicals while living in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He lived in Belize for a few years before moving to Independence, Missouri. He drove long-haul trucks for JB Hunt Transport for three years.
His teaching career started with substitute teaching in Prince George, Brisitsh Columbia. He taught biology, chemistry and math at Corozal Community College, San Andreas, Belize.
He taught biology at Center Place Restoration School in Independence and then Harrisonville High School for 13 years. He was a member of St. Michael's Church in Independence.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene (Wheatly) Dyck in 2008, and by his father, Joseph Dyck in 2010. He is survived by his wife, Tracy Scavuzzo, Harrisonville, Missouri; daughters, Jennifer Ewasiuk and Sara Morrison, her husband, Brent and two granddaughters, Olivia and Thora; his mother, Gladys Dyck; stepchildren, Amanda Zwiener, Rachel Woods, Angela Muether, Ryan Woods and Raghela Scavuzzo; sister, Glenda Checkley; nephew, Tyler Checkley and niece, Alisha Checkley-Glowicki.
