Obituary

John Woodrow Barnes, 82, Garden City, Missouri, died Sunday, June 16, 2013 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 20 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian, Missouri with burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association or American Heart Association.

John was born May 6, 1931 in Lexington, Missouri, one of 13 children born to Maude and Ollie (Adams) Barnes. He was a U. S. Army veteran. John spent the first part of his life working for Battenfield Grease and Oil, then went to work for Navaho Freight as a dock worker. The majority of his life he spent working for Morrow Lumber Company in Peculiar Missouri. John ended his career, retiring as a carpenter, working with his son and son-in-laws in residential construction. He worked hard all of his life and whatever he did, he did it well.

John spent a lot of his spare time collecting things and on any given weekend you could find him with his brother, Barney or wife, Pearl at a garage sale or auction. He not only collected for himself but he found things for his loved ones. John loved taking care of his brother who lived with him for 50 plus years of his married life. On a Friday or Saturday night you would most likely find John entertaining family or friends playing pinochle or pitch, and you were more than welcome to join in, if you were brave enough. John loved to travel and anticipated every trip. He loyally followed the KC Royals, Chiefs and MU Tigers, win or lose.

He was the most gentle, giving man anyone has ever known. He loved God and lived his life as an example of Christ. He not only claimed to be a Christian but lived his life that way. He was loved by all and he blessed their lives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Cecil Warren, Dorothy Dunker, Ruby Jones, Thelma Olivera, Goldie Allen and Mary Elizabeth Barnes and brothers, Henry Barnes, William Barnes, Marvin Barnes and Ryland T Barnes. John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Pearl E. Barnes, of the home; sons Johnny Barnes (Carla) of Peculiar, MO, Joseph Barnes (Chris) of El Dorado Springs, MO; daughters, Elaine Rasmussen (Mark) of Kansas City, MO, Monett Jackson (Dale) of Adrian, MO, Chris Collins (Calvin) of El Dorado Springs, MO and Nicole Walquist (Carl) of Harrisonville, MO; sisters, Nina Smith of Warsaw MO and Jewell Dogle (Frank) of Independence, MO; also 16 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
