Obituary

Walter Joe Durbin, 84 of Harrisonville, MO died Monday, April 5, 2010 at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, MO. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 9, 2010 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Harrisonville. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 8 at the Atkinson Chapel in Harrisonville with Rosary service at 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145 or to the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, P.O. Box 247, Harrisonville, MO 64701.

Joe was born February 2, 1926 in Mapleton, KS, the son of Walter Joseph Durbin, Sr. and Katherine E. (Noggle) Durbin. He was raised on small farms around Fulton, KS and later attended Fulton High School, graduating from Argentine High School in Kansas City, KS in 1944. Joe was then drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the 613th Pack Artillery, where he served honorably in the last horse cavalry unit in the U. S. Army. His unit fought in China, Burma and India Theater during WWII and received numerous unit citations. He was honorably discharged on July 21, 1946. Joe married Norma Jean Yoder on September 3, 1949 and had four children, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Joe worked several jobs from 1946-1963 including Marvin Burris Ford and MFA Seed Company. He then became a field agent for MFA/Shelter Insurance in 1963, where he worked as an agent for 46 years in Harrisonville, MO where he made his home. He retired from Shelter Insurance on December 31, 2008. During his life Joe enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling and various other outdoor activities. He was a skilled musician and singer and played in various local bands and entertaining at numerous local events and retirement homes. Joe was an active member of many organizations including VFW, American Legion, Sons of the American Revolution. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Charlotte Durbin and one brother, John L. Durbin. He is survived by his wife, Jean of the home; three sons, David L. Durbin of Harrisonville, MO, Mitch Durbin of Harrisonville and Chad Durbin of Kansas City, MO; four grandchildren, Sarah, Ian, Bailey and Austin; three great-grandchildren, Mason, Avery and Lily; one sister, Barbara Durbin-Wilkie of Kansas City, MO and one brother, Errol F. Durbin of Harrisonville, MO.
