Burial will be in Freeman Cemetery, Freeman, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to the Adrian United Methodist Church or to any children's charity of your choice.
Joan was born December 17, 1930 in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, the daughter of Paul C. and Nellie (Kinnard) Phillips. She was the fourth of five children. She was a 1949 graduate of Pleasant Hill High School. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church.
Always being the worker, when she was a child, she would pull weeds or carry in firewood for many of the neighbors to earn her spending money. While in high school, she worked in the local drugstores. In the spring of 1950, Joan went to a local dance where she met a young man named Charles Maloney. On September 1, 1950, Joan and Charles were married and that dance lasted nearly sixty years until Charles' passing in 2010.
For the first few years of their marriage, Joan and Charles made their home in Freeman, Missouri. In 1953, they bought a farm east of Adrian where they remained until Charles passed away. At that time, Joan moved to Archie with her daughter and son-in-law. From there she ran the business of her farm until her death.
Joan loved the farm life and worked in the fields many long hard hours. She also loved to garden and to bake. Her brothers and brothers-in-law always liked to go to visit to see what kind of pies Joan had made. She made cinnamon rolls with grandkids, cookies for Charles, brownies for Terry and the best angel food cake in the world for Janice.
Her goal was to make everyone feel welcome in their home, no matter whether it was someone she had never met or some rowdy girls; they were all welcomed with open arms. In her "spare" time, she raised chickens, delivered eggs to many Adrian residents, sewed for many people, raised the occasional orphaned pig or calf, not to mention being a chauffeur for a teenage daughter and friends. She did all these things as well as being the main caregiver for her mother and Charles' mother until their deaths.
In the late 1970's, Joan went to work for the Family Center in Harrisonville, Missouri, where she worked for approximately 20 years. No matter how busy she was, Joan was never too busy for her family or a neighbor.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles on April 6, 2010, an infant son, Gerald, an infant great-grandson, Nicholas, two brothers, Bill and Bob Phillips and two sisters, Margaret Scott and Frances Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Janice Winn and her husband, Terry, Archie, Missouri; three grandchildren, Scott Winn, Newton, Iowa, Stacy Winn, Branson, Missouri and Shawna Boger, Newton, Iowa; four great-grandchildren, Holly Winn, Cody McGee, Hanna Boger and Jessica Boger and a sister-in-law, Twila Phillips, as well as many other family and friends. Joan will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by many.
