James "Jim" Gray, 88, Harrisonville, Missouri, formerly of Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at Golden Years Care Center in Harrisonville. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 12 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville. Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 12 at the Fairview Cemetery in Cherryvale, Kansas. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, December 11 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville. Memorial contributions may be made to Serenity Care Hospice, Harrisonville.
Jim was born July 9, 1927 in Cherryvale, Kansas, the youngest child of William and Edith (Hummel) Gray. He was a 1945 graduate of Cherryvale High School. He married Betty Lee Peal on July 3, 1947 in Cherryvale. Jim served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1946, during WWII. They moved to Kansas City, Kansas in 1950 until moving to Prairie Village, Kansas in 1953. Jim was a bookkeeper for Herman & Walker Oil Company in Kansas City, and most recently worked for Rocor Oil Company, retiring in 2000. Prior to that, he was a partner with his brother, Grant, in Gray's Bottled Gas in Kansas City, Kansas. Jim moved to Harrisonville in January, 2003, and enjoyed making new friends and attended many dances that he so much enjoyed.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Grant, Harvey Jack and Bill, four sisters, Marie, Jaunita, Frances, and Nadine, and his beloved wife, Betty, on May 28, 2000. He is survived by one son, J. Michael Gray and his wife, Trish, Plano, Texas; one daughter, Debra Surber and her husband, Robert, Jr., Harrisonville, Missouri; 5 grandchildren, Brande Lee Baumgarden and her husband, Floyd, Tracey Lynn Roepke and her husband, Tony, Dr. Courtney Elizabeth Rose and her husband, Trevor, Anissa Lynn Surber, and Michael Dean Surber and his wife, Kasey; 10 great-grandchildren, Branden and Auston Crust, Ashlee, Isabell and Joseph Roepke, Henry and Madeline Rose, Jessica Grah, and Karson and Mason Surber; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.
