James "Jim" Walter Yoss, 90, of Adrian, MO, passed away on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, MO. Funeral services were held  Saturday, September 5, 2026, at the United Methodist Church in Adrian, MO.  Interment at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Prairie City, MO. Memorial contributions can be made to Adrian United Methodist Church or Adrian Optimist Club.

Jim was born January 19, 1936, to Walter W. and Ella C. (Stevener) Yoss in Appleton City, MO. He graduated from Appleton City High School and then attended Pittsburg State University. After serving in the United States Army, he returned to Appleton City to work at Yoss Brothers Grocery, where he met his future wife, Carolyn June Asman. They were united in marriage on August 11, 1963. They were married for 50 wonderful years and had three children. Jim moved his family to Adrian in 1972 to open Yoss Thriftway.

Jim was a firm believer in community involvement. He and Carolyn joined the Adrian United Methodist Church and volunteered with the United Methodist Youth Fellowship. Jim was a member of the Adrian Optimist Club, served on the Adrian Manor Nursing Home Board, and was a strong supporter of many local organizations. In 2014 he was recognized for his community service as Grand Marshall of the Adrian July 4th Celebration.

Jim had many interests and hobbies that he shared with lifelong friends. He loved ping pong, skiing, hunting, fishing, golfing, motorcycle trips, playing chess and cards. Jim and Carolyn enjoyed wintering in Las Vegas and traveling with friends and family. The thing Jim loved the most was spending time with his grandkids and attending their activities.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carolyn; his sister, Lois Yoss; and great-granddaughter, Halston Scott. He is survived by his children: Kari (Brent) Scott, Kip (Susan) Yoss, and Kristi Cumpton; grandchildren: Drew (Makyna) Scott, Aaron and Ian Yoss, Paige and Adam Cumpton; great-grandchildren: Breelyn and Lachlan Scott; brother, Howard Yoss; and many other family members and friends.
