James Vernon "Butch" Cox, 77, of Peculiar, Missouri, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2025, at his home in Peculiar. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at the Harrisonville Church of the Nazarene, Harrisonville, Missouri.. Burial, with military honors, at Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville. Contributions are suggested to Harrisonville VFW Post #4409.
James was born on October 1, 1947, in Fordyce, Arkansas, a son of Clell and Tera Marie (Williams) Cox. He lived in Arkansas until moving with the family to Kansas City, MO, in 1950. Butch was a 1965 graduate of Southeast High School in Kansas City and was drafted into the Army in 1966. He served two years active duty and four years in the reserves.
Butch was united in marriage to Terran "Terry" Ann Lyons on June 15, 1969, at Sunrise Beach, MO. They made their home in Kansas City, MO, until 1972, when they purchased property and built their home in Peculiar. Butch worked for Branaman Cabinets in sales for 34 years before his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, playing cards, riding motorcycles and working on cars with his brother. They loved to travel with friends and family on motorcycles and in their motorhome.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Fletcher Cox; a daughter, Stacy Ann Cox; and a sister, Linda Hoover. He is survived by his wife, Terry Cox, of Peculiar, MO; a son, Michael C. Cox (Julie), of Harrisonville, MO; a daughter, Dana M. Cox, of Peculiar, MO; a brother, David Cox (Cindy Stoner), of Harrisonville, MO; grandchildren: Cheyenne, Zayn, and Xander; and many nieces and nephews.
