Jack R Cook, 82, Freeman, MO, died Monday, November 17, 2008 at Golden Years Care Center in Harrisonville, MO. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday, November 21 at the West Line Christian Church in Cleveland, MO. Burial will be in Freeman Cemetery, Freeman, MO. Visitation 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, November 20 at the Atkinson Chapel in Harrisonville. Contributions may be made to the West Line Christian Church.
Jack was born February 8, 1926 in Freeman, MO, the son of Ted R and Alta (Slusher) Cook. He lived his entire life in the West Line, Cleveland and Freeman, MO area. He attended school and was a 1943 graduate of the Cleveland, MO School. Upon graduation, Jack served the United States Army and honorably fought in World War II at which time he was wounded and captured by the Germans and was liberated from their prison camp on March 26, 1945. On May 8, 1947, Jack was united in marriage to Velma Mae Greene in Harrisonville, MO. Out of this marriage he had three children, Daryl, Sandra and Kris.
Jack was employed as a farm machinery mechanic for many years, starting out at the Woods Implement Company in Harrisonville. Later on he became self-employed and earned a reputation as one of the best farm machinery mechanics in Cass County. Before his death, he would still work on tractors if someone called him. Jack had an opportunity to become a sub-carrier for the Freeman Post Office and later became Postmaster, retiring in 1987.
Jack was a lifelong ham radio operator, which he loved with a passion. He was a member of the West Line Christian Church.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, Robert Moloski. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Velma Cook, of the home; two sons, Daryl Cook and his wife, Naomi, Cleveland, MO and Kris Cook and his wife, Jennifer, Harrisonville, MO; one daughter, Sandra Cook and companion, Cliff Linder, Jr., Harrisonville, MO; one sister, Verla Richardson and her husband, Gene, Mesa, AZ; 7 grandchildren, Brad Moloski and his wife, Amie, Brenton Cook, Bethany Cook, Samantha Cook, Jonathan Cook, Corina Brown and her husband, T. J., Loren Cook; three great-grandchildren, Shelbie, Robbie and Mason, and many other relatives and friends.
