Hugh was born on March 28, 1937 in Twelvemile Prairie, Johnston County, OK, on Easter Sunday to Horace and Bessie (Walker) Cobb. Hugh had attended a small Arkansas high school without a football team. In 1954, just before his senior year of high school, Hugh's family moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas. Not only did Fayetteville play high school football, they played it well at a very high level of competition. Not exactly a prime opportunity to make your debut to the sport. Not only did Hugh make the team but won a starting position in one of Arkansas' strongest high school backfields. Hugh was a special young man and was recognized with all conference honors and a scholarship to play football at Coffeyville, Kansas Junior College, where he attended for two years. Coffeyville, at the time, had a reputation for being one of the best junior colleges in the nation when it came to providing top player prospects for established four-year college football programs. Hugh completed his degree at the University of Arkansas in 1964.
He married the love of his life Barbara Ann Cook on March 27, 1958 in Miami, OK. Hugh had a dream of becoming a football coach and a teacher. This dream was realized when he landed a head coaching job at Elkins, Arkansas. Hugh started the program from the ground up and gained invaluable experience in player recruitment and program basics. His next opportunity led him to Harrisonville, Missouri where he was the Harrisonville Wildcat head football coach from 1968-1975. During Hugh's tenure as head coach he won five conference titles, was state runner up in 1970 and undefeated in 1971. After the 1975 season, Coach Cobb stepped down and continued his teaching career in the Harrisonville school system, retiring in 1995. During that period of time, Coach Cobb returned to coach two freshman teams, both of which were undefeated under his leadership. This included the freshman team of the 1983 class which would also make an appearance in the state championship game.
Hugh was a Hall of Fame coach as well as a Hall of Fame teacher. Coach Cobb had an uncanny ability to teach all students. There were no students too difficult for Hugh to reach, primarily because Hugh liked all students. His biggest achievement being the impact he made on the lives of those individuals he came in contact with.
Hugh is preceded in death by his father, Horace L. Cobb, his mother, Bessie Cobb and his brother, Harold Cobb. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, two daughters, Toni Cobb and Shannon McCoy and husband, Martin, and a granddaughter, Bayleigh McCoy, all of Broken Arrow, OK; his sister, Charlotte Harrington, Berryhill, OK, and two brothers, Carthal Cobb, Tulsa, OK and Charles Cobb, Dallas, TX.
