Helen was born October 1, 1928, in Peculiar, MO, the daughter of Floyd and Irene Mae (Vaughn) Downey. Helen graduated from Peculiar High School and afterwards worked at Sears Roebuck Billing Office and then Panhandle Eastern Pipeline typing and working on the switchboard. She married Chester John Arasim in Peculiar, MO, on June 29, 1952. They had one son.
Helen continued her work career, after staying home with her son, working at Harris Hanson (based in St. Louis) part-time as a secretary for local representatives in KC. She was then recruited to work for Hewlitt Packard as a secretary in the first Kansas City Hewlitt Packard office, later becoming the first office manager for HP in KC. Her retirement in 1988 was temporary as, upon request, she returned as part-time HP switchboard operator until final retirement in 1990. She began her most treasured job of keeping her grandchildren, then great-nephews, and later her own great-grandchildren part-time. Helen will always be remembered as a great mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister, and aunt. She enjoyed her dachshunds, gardening, taking care of her house, the lake house, and yard, and attending family functions. She was a member of the Baptist Church in her early years, and the Catholic Church after marriage, as well as, Cave Springs Association in Raytown. She loved her family, friends, the lake, the outdoors, and being independent.
