Hazel Marie Thomas, 87, Freeman, Missouri, died Monday, November 17, 2014 at Golden Years Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 20, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Freeman, Missouri with burial in Freeman Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church in Freeman.
Hazel was born July 1, 1927 in West Line, Missouri, the daughter of Thomas Franklin and Lena Opal (Smith) Davis. She lived her entire life in Freeman, Missouri. On November 21, 1946, Hazel was united in marriage to Walter Glen "Tootie" Thomas. Hazel and Tootie were well known for their love for each other and their community, church, family and friends. Hazel worked for The Little Shirt Factory in Freeman as a seamstress. She was an active member of the Freeman Baptist Church and the Freeman Community Club.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, George R. Davis, and her husband, "Tootie" on March 13, 2000. Her loving memory will be cherished by her surviving family: one daughter, Carol Vergouven and husband, Billy, Harrisonville, Missouri; one son, Sam Thomas and wife, Martha, Hewitt, Texas; 5 grandchildren, Eric Vergouven and wife, Paula, Neil Vergouven and wife, Janelle, Samantha Bowman and husband, Zane, Dana Evans, Mike Thomas and wife, Traci; 11 great-grandchildren, Dalton, Devin, Kara, Kelsey, Abby, Drew, Ty, Dakota, Roper, Ian and Marisa; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
