Obituary

Harley Hartwig Martens, 82, Adrian, Missouri, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Blue Springs, Missouri.  Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April, 28, 2014 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian.  Burial will be in Crescent Hill Cemetery in Adrian.  Friends may call Sunday, April 27 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  Contributions may be made to the Center Place Restoration School in Independence, Missouri or Western Missouri Antique Tractor & Machinery Association in Adrian, Missouri.

Harley was born September 19, 1931 to Johannes and Vera (Sullivan) Martens in Harlan, Iowa. He was the youngest of three sons. He graduated from Persia High School of Persia, Iowa in 1949. He attended Graceland College, majoring in Religion. Harley served in the US Army from 1953-1955. He married Betty Frances Piatt on July 2, 1958 and together began their lifelong career of farming.

He was baptized at the age of 15 and served in the Ministry of the Reorganized Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints for 68 years. He farmed in Iowa, moving to Adrian in 1977, where he continued until his death. He also did some electrical contracting. After relocating to Adrian, Harley enjoyed his hobbies of flying and motorcycling. In particular, he enjoyed his coast to coast motorcycle trips with his very good friends. His greatest love was serving the Lord, spending time with his family and
entertaining friends. Harley NEVER knew a stranger.


He was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest brother, Bernley Martens. He is survived by his wife, Betty, happily married for nearly 56 years; one brother, Stanley Martens, Portsmouth, Iowa; three children, Carl and Rebecca (Brewster) Martens, Independence, Missouri, Joel and Beth (Wheatley) Martens, Lee's Summit, Missouri, Nan (Martens) and Danny Richmond, Adrian, Missouri; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; extended family and many friends.
