Grant Alan Bever, MD, a board-certified physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology, died June 30, 2018, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral services were Saturday, July 7, 2018 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO. Burial in Freeman Cemetery, Freeman, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to UMKC Student Scholarships.
Born in Coffeyville, Kansas, Dr. Bever received his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University and his medical degree from the University of Kansas. He completed his internship at Tripler Army Medical Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii as an Obstetrics and Gynecology intern, and his residency at the University of Missouri-Kansas City in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He served in the United States Army as a flight surgeon for seven years during the Vietnam War.
In Dr. Bever's private practice he was on the staff of 14 hospitals in the Kansas City area delivering some ten thousand babies. He was Chief of Staff at Cass Medical Center in Harrisonville, and served on many cancer committees in the area. Dr. Bever was Director of Women's Health for St. Louis County. His duties included supervision of medical students and residents for Washington University and St Louis University. Dr. Bever's volunteer efforts included being Medical Director for a Hispanic Clinic, Accion Social Communitaria, "LaClinica" for thirteen years. The students and residents from Truman State University also did rotations at this clinic.
The St. Louis Rams honored Dr. Bever as the first Community Quarterback for his community service in 2004. He was a dedicated member and delegate of the St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society for nearly twenty-five years after being president-elect of the West Central Missouri Medical Society. He was nominated to the presidency of the Missouri State Medical Society in 1994 and relinquished it to a female colleague so she could become the first woman state president. He was a true friend first, last and always.
