Obituary

Golda Mae Umstattd (nee Turner), 81, passed away October 24, 2013, at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 28, at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian, Missouri, with visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Ballard, Missouri. Memorial gifts can be made to the Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church or Walnut Grove Cemetery.

Golda was born February 7, 1932, to George Evan and Chloie Mae Turner. Golda attended Bates City Elementary and High School, and graduated in 1950 from Oak Grove High School in Oak Grove. Upon graduation, she attended Central Missouri State University. Golda was married May 11, 1957, to Ralph Umstattd; they were married until his death on June 16, 1986.

Golda believed in working hard. After her time at CMSU, Golda worked as a supervisor at Business Men's Assurance (BMA) in Kansas City, where she worked until the birth of her first son. Golda also worked at a dozen schools throughout the region as a substitute teacher. She maintained a lifetime teaching certificate. Furthermore, Golda was employed as secretary at Butler's Ohio Street United Methodist church for over 22 years.

Golda believed in her community. She was engaged civically and within her church, serving as the treasurer of Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church and the Walnut Grove Cemetery, as well as the clerk of the Spruce Township Board for over 20 years. Golda resided on the same farm since 1957, and was dedicated to her community.

Golda believed in playing to win. She loved playing cards and had a competitive streak, especially during her regular card games with Margie Umstattd, Jenny Umstattd, Rosellen Wainscott and Edith Dilly. She liked sports of any kind, especially playing basketball, and watching her children and grandchildren play sports, always cheering them on. That competitive spirit carried over to shoe shopping too: less than three pairs and the day was not a success, she said. Bonus points if they were red, her favorite color.

Golda believed in friendship. Golda was a member of the Enterprise Club, a women's social organization, and enjoyed her regular Friday appointments at the hair salon. She also loved jokes, surprises and pranks, even when they were played on her! Golda hoped for a big party for her 80th birthday. As the day neared, her children pretended it wasn't happening, and then surprised her with a big gathering at Butler's Southside Café. On her birthday and every day, Golda believed in eating dessert — her favorite part of the meal — first.

Golda was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ralph; her parents, George Evan and Chloe Mae Turner; her brothers, Burton Turner and George B. Turner; and a grandson, John Mark Umstattd. Golda is survived by siblings Wanda (Ray) Dyer of Odessa, Lee Wayne (Joyce) Turner of Olathe, Kansas, Marion (Velva) Turner of Odessa and Roy Gene (Joan) Turner of Independence, Missouri; children Mark (Debra) Umstattd of Adrian, Sherry (Steven) Scheilz of Butler, and Bill Umstattd of Butler; grandchildren Becky (Brad) Selle, Cindy (Jared) Webster, Donna Umstattd, Seth (Sarah) Scheilz and Shannon Scheilz; great-grandchildren Ashton Kiger, Alexis Selle, Aubrey Selle and Addison Webster; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
