Gladys was born December 1, 1947 in Sabetha, Kansas, the daughter of Mervin Forrest and Verna (Schuetz) Roberts. Gladys graduated from Archie High School in 1965. Her early years were spent as a loving homemaker and mother, well known as an excellent cook and seamstress. Later in life, Gladys returned to school to get her college degree by working multiple jobs at night and going to school full time during the day. She earned her degree from Central Missouri State University and graduated with a 4.0 grade average, proving it is never too late in life to fulfill your dreams, and hers was teaching.

Gladys taught 7th grade and college prep language arts at Miami R-1 School and also served as the librarian. Reading was one of her passions and she loved being able to share great works of literature with her students, and to teach them how to effectively prepare for all of the papers they would write in college. Gladys also worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Kansas City for over 20 years. She was a talented artist and loved going to the opera. She will truly be missed.

Gladys was preceded in death by her father, Mervin Roberts. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Verna Roberts of Adrian, Missouri; sister, Mary Blackman and husband, Robert, Pleasant Hill, Missouri; brother, Jack Roberts and wife, Mary, Kansas City, Missouri. Gladys is also survived by her three sons, Alan Hocker, West Des Moines, Iowa, David Hocker, Walpole, Massachusetts, and Brad Hocker and wife, Jenny, Joplin, Missouri; 7 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, Jessica Crawford (and husband Casey and daughter Harper), Derek Hocker, Corie Hocker-Cutshall (and husband Steve), Kailee Hocker, Josh Hocker, Avery Hocker and Blair Hocker.
