Gary Downey, 82, of Harrisonville, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2025 at Golden Years in Harrisonville, MO. Memorial services were held on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO. Inurnment will be at a later date in Orient Cemetery in Harrisonville, MO.

Gary was born December 24, 1942, in Harrisonville, a son of James Milford and Alice LaVern (Yancey) Downey. He was a life long Harrisonville resident and was a 1960 graduate of Harrisonville High School. Gary attended college in Warrensburg, MO, and worked as an accountant for Opportunities Unlimited Corp. before his retirement.

Gary was united in marriage to Mary Fowler Patterson on October 8, 1987, in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, and they continued to make their home in Harrisonville. Gary loved the outdoors and spent many hours on the golf course, working in the yard and with his flowers. He watched the outside world from his window in later years.  Listening to music and a cup of coffee brought him joy. He made friends where ever he went and will be missed by many. He was a member of the Harrisonville First Baptist Church, and a member of the Twin Pines Country Club in Harrisonville.

Gary is survived by his wife, Mary Downey, Harrisonville, MO; his sons: Darren S. (Staci) Downey, Overland Park, Kansas; Justin R. Downey, Kansas City, MO; and Darren L. (Bonnie) Patterson, Adrian, MO; a daughter, Meghan Downey, Kansas City, MO; a sister, Linda (Ronnie) Hale, Harrisonville, MO; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
