Gareld was born April 27, 1940 in Lamar, MO, the son of Albert Lee "Bert" and Gladys (Shipley) Phillips. The family lived on the family farm in Amarugia and attended Oak Grove country school until he was in 5th grade. In 1951, the family moved to Archie. In high school Gareld excelled in sports and held records for many years. Gareld, as a 1-man track team, took 3rd place at state and he also set a single game scoring record in basketball at state. After high school, he attended Pittsburg State College where he played basketball. He then attended K.C. Business College.

Gareld worked at General Motors for 14 years before joining his father-in-law and brothers-in-law at the W. R. Cantrell and Sons Sale Co. in Archie. When the business sold after 40 years, Gareld and Jean moved to Mound City, KS where Gareld designed and helped build their home there. His hobby in the winter time was working in his shop and building beautiful clocks. He loved living at the lake where he enjoyed fishing, golfing and entertaining his children and grandchildren.

On November 7, 1959, Gareld was united in marriage to Jean Cantrell. In 1962, to their joy and delight, their daughter, Penny Jean was born. In 1969, they were excited to adopt Joe (4 years) and Paul (11 months). They continued to live in Archie where the children attended school. In the summers they enjoyed camping and fishing trips.

They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 7, 2009, at the First Baptist Church in Archie where they were married. It was a beautiful day of celebration planned by their children. The following spring they enjoyed a trip by Amtrak to California to visit his cousins. Gareld professed faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior and he and Jean became associated with the First Baptist Church in Mound City where he was a member at the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, Brandon Phillips, one sister, Roberta Ford and his in-laws W. R. and Edna Cantrell. He is survived by his wife, Jean of the home; Penny German and husband, Warren, Archie, MO; Joe Phillips and wife, Jenni, Raymore, MO and Paul Phillips, Kansas City, MO; one brother, Bob and wife, Karen, Branson, MO; three grandchildren, Samantha, Nicholle and Katlin Phillips; nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.
